CARLA BREWER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 

The Carla Brewer Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $500 will be awarded to a LNI participant. Award recipients must have demonstrated exceptional character and leadership in furthering their own progress and in enriching the lives of others, especially in service, academics, and community involvement.

 

Eligibility:

• Member of a Lakota Nation Invitational participating school.

• Must have an acceptance letter or pending acceptance to a post-secondary school/technical school as a full-time student* in an undergraduate Bachelor’s, Associate’s degree, technical certified program at a public or private, US-based accredited institution of higher education.

*Full-time as determined by your institution and program of study.

• Must carry a 3.5 or higher gpa prior to this event or in the top 5% of her class (please submit a current gpa from your school registrar or letter of standing from your school registrar)

• Must be a Senior in your respective school

• A current picture must accompany the application when sent in

Selection Process:

• The Lakota Nation Scholarship Director (John Haas) designates the selection committee.

• Applications will be reviewed and scholarship recipients will be selected in accordance with the written criteria established.

• All qualified applicants will be considered.

• All application criteria, questions and appropriate paperwork must be completed to be considered. Specific examples of activities and achievements are especially helpful to the selection committee.

• Finalists will be notified in December 2022 via e-mail, public announcement, or letter. We ask that you do not contact officials asking if you were chosen as a finalist.

Amount:

• Carla Brewer Memorial scholarship will be $500 to be paid directly to the recipient at their High School graduation ceremony

Distribution:

• Scholarships will be awarded a certificate/letter in December 2022 during the LNI Tournament.  The checks will be mailed in May to the respective school to be distributed to the recipient at their graduation ceremony. Students must send in an official letter from their school of choice stating the student is in good standing.  Students must continue to attend classes and maintain no lower than a 3.5 grade-point average (or equivalent) or be in the top 5% of their class. 

Renewal Process:

• This scholarship is not renewable it is a 1-time award.

Application requirements:

• Applicants will be required to submit the following:

  • Resume

  • Essay to demonstrate service, scholarship, humble leadership, and/or impact.

  • 3 Character recommendations from a third party, not related to you (i.e teacher, coach, friend, neighbor, tribal leader)

  • 250-word biography

 

Selection basis:

• 1-20 pts -Service

  • Dedication to service beyond self in and out of uniform.

• 1-20 pts- Scholarship

  • Actively pursuing education listening and learning by doing.

• 1-250pts-Humble Leadership

  • Bringing people together to achieve uncommon results.

• 1-20 pts-Impact

  • Advancing an idea or cause to make the world a better place.

  •  

Deadline for application:

The deadline for submitting all required paperwork and documentation is November 25, 2022 Applications will not be considered if documentation or paperwork is missing.
